(Dresden, Germany) - When the U.S Short Track Speedskating team finished the last World Cup event of the season in Dresden, Germany, they left with seven medals and a first place ladies team classification for the first time in history. Gold medal winners for the event were Kimberly Derrick (Memphis, TN) in the 1000m, J.R. Celski (Federal Way, WA) in the 1500m, Anthony Lobello (Tallahassee, FL) in the second 500m and the Ladies 3000m relay team. Silver medalists were Katherine Reutter (Champaign, IL), taking second in both the 1500m and the 1000m, and Celski in the 1000m. During their gold-medal performance, the ladies relay team beat the current U.S. record with a time of 4:12.602. This time also beats the Olympic Record set by the Korean team. The men were ranked second in the team classification, despite the fact Apolo Anton Ohno (Seattle, WA) did not compete in the last two World Cup events and Jordan Malone (Denton, TX) was pulled from the competition due to an injury. Team USA returns home to prepare for the 2009 ISU Short Track World Championships held in Vienna, Austria during the first weekend in March. |
