 Personal

Marsicano started skating when he was 1 year old and playing hockey when he was 4. He moved to speedskating in third grade, inspired by former Olympic coach Pat Maxwell. He suffered a life-threatening leg injury in a 2004 short track race. Another boy slipped toward Marsicano, and one of the boy's skates sliced Marsicano's leg to the bone. The injury, which caused him to lose half the blood in his body, set Marsicano back a year and left him with a scar the size of a skater's blade. He gave up short track skating to focus on the long track. The move has worked wonders, as Marsicano won bronze in the overall at the 2007 World Junior Championships, moved up to 20th at the 2008 World All-Around Championships and rocketed to fifth at the 2009 World All-Around Championships. He broke the World Record in the 1000m in March, becoming the first skater under 1:07, 20 minutes before Davis lowered the mark even further.
